Snow on Naini Lake's surrounding hills is one of the most photographed winter scenes in India, but it does not happen every year. If you are hoping for snowfall in Nainital, the trick is knowing where in Kumaon snow is more likely, and being ready to move a little higher. This guide covers Nainital, Mukteshwar, Ramgarh, Binsar and Munsiyari.

Quick answer: Nainital gets snow on a few days, mostly in January, first on Naina Peak and Snow View. For better odds, go to Mukteshwar or Binsar. For near-certain snow in Kumaon, go to Munsiyari. Nainital weather now.

Snow in Nainital

At about 1,938 m, Nainital is just below the usual winter snowline. The town only turns white in stronger western disturbances, typically one or two spells in January. When it happens, the ring of peaks around the lake gets snow first and holds it longest:

  • Naina Peak (China Peak): The highest point around Nainital, about 2,615 m. Snowy far more often than the town, and a beautiful winter walk.
  • Snow View Point: Reached by ropeway or on foot, with a clear view of the snow-covered Himalayan range on sunny days after a spell.
  • Tiffin Top and Kilbury: Forest trails that stay white under the oaks after snowfall.

Even without snow in town, a clear January morning in Nainital gives you sharp views of the snowy main Himalaya from these viewpoints. See our Nainital places to visit guide for the full sightseeing list.

Ramgarh

Known as the fruit bowl of Kumaon, Ramgarh is lower than Nainital and gets only light snow in very cold winters. Visit for the orchards and quiet, and keep Mukteshwar as your snow back-up.

Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, near Almora, sits high in oak and rhododendron forest and gets snow in colder winters. On clear days the Zero Point walk gives one of the widest Himalayan panoramas in Kumaon.

If you want near-certain snow in Kumaon, go to Munsiyari. It faces the Panchachuli peaks and is snowy from December to February, with the Khaliya Top walk above town turning into a snow trek. It is a long drive via Thal or the Kalamuni pass, so allow at least 4–5 days.
