Bhagirathi River Banks, Uttarkashi Uttarkashi
Magh Mela is one of the most important cultural events of the Bhagirathi valley, held annually in Uttarkashi during the month of Magh (January). The seven-day fair begins on Makar Sankranti and is a magnificent gathering of communities from across the upper Garhwal region. Deities (devtas) from various villages are carried in decorated palanquins to Uttarkashi, accompanied by traditional musical bands. The mela features folk dance performances including Harul, Tandi, and Raso, along with local sports competitions. Historically, it served as the main trading fair for remote mountain communities to exchange goods. The fair is held along the banks of the Bhagirathi river and draws thousands of visitors.
