About Maa Purnagiri Temple

Purnagiri (also written Punyagiri) is counted among the Shakti Peeths. According to tradition, it marks the place where the navel of Goddess Sati fell. The temple stands on a ridge above the Sharda river (known as the Kali or Mahakali higher up), with the river forming the border with Nepal far below. Devotees come to ask for blessings and return to tie a red cloth or thread as a mark of a wish fulfilled. Read more on our Purnagiri Temple page.

Purnagiri Weather: What to Expect Through the Year

Purnagiri lies at the edge of the Kumaon foothills, where the plains around Tanakpur meet the first ridges of the Himalaya. That means it is warmer than hill stations like Nainital, with a strong monsoon. The hilltop is noticeably cooler and breezier than Tanakpur town below.

How to Reach Purnagiri

By train

Tanakpur is the nearest railway station, about 20 km from the temple road head. It has direct trains from Delhi and Dehradun on some days. Otherwise, travel to Bareilly or Pilibhit and continue by road.

By road

Tanakpur is roughly 320–350 km from Delhi (7–9 hours) via Moradabad and Bareilly or via Rampur and Pilibhit. Uttarakhand Roadways and private buses run from Delhi's Anand Vihar ISBT. From Tanakpur, shared jeeps and taxis go up the hill road to Thuligad.

By air

Pantnagar is the nearest airport. From there it is a 3–4 hour drive to Tanakpur.

The walk to the temple

From the road head near Thuligad, a paved path of roughly 3 km, mostly steps, climbs to the temple. It is lined with shops selling prasad, chunri and refreshments. Most people take 1–1.5 hours at a steady pace. Elderly visitors should go slowly and rest often, and everyone should carry water in summer.

Purnagiri Mela

The big annual Purnagiri Mela begins around Chaitra Navratri (March–April) and continues for several weeks, drawing devotees from across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. Sharad Navratri in October also brings large crowds. During the mela:

  • Queues on the steps can last hours, especially on weekends and Navratri days.
  • The district administration runs extra buses, parking, medical camps and traffic controls on the hill road.
  • Start the climb very early in the morning to avoid the heat and the longest queues.
  • Keep valuables minimal and agree a meeting point with your group in case you get separated.

Siddh Baba Temple

By local tradition, devotees complete the Purnagiri yatra by also visiting the Siddh Baba temple on the Nepal side of the Sharda river. If you plan to go, carry a valid photo ID for the border crossing near Banbasa.

Where to Stay

Most pilgrims stay in Tanakpur, which has dharamshalas, budget hotels and a few mid-range options near the bus stand and railway station. Simple dharamshalas and rest houses also exist along the route. Book ahead during the mela and Navratri.

Places to Visit Near Purnagiri

  • Tanakpur: The gateway town on the Sharda river, with ghats and the Sharda barrage nearby at Banbasa.
  • Champawat: The old capital of the Chand kings, known for the carved stone Baleshwar temple. About 75 km uphill from Tanakpur.
  • Lohaghat: A green hill town known for the colonial-era cottages of Abbott Mount and the Advaita Ashram at Mayawati.
  • Nainital and the lake district: A 4–5 hour drive away if you want to add a hill station. See our guide to the Nainital area in winter.

  3. Day 2: Sharda ghat in the morning, return to Delhi; or continue uphill to Champawat and Lohaghat for an extra day.

Tips for the Yatra

  • Carry a light jacket from November to February. Mornings on the hill are cold.

  • Respect temple rules: footwear off where asked, and no photography where signs prohibit it.
  • Keep plastic to a minimum and use the dustbins along the path.
