Uttarakhand Weather 2026–27: Today's Weather by City & Month-by-Month Guide
Uttarakhand's weather can be three seasons at once. On the same January afternoon it can be 20°C and sunny in Rishikesh, 8°C in Mussoorie and -5°C with fresh snow in Auli. That is because the state rises from about 300 m in the Haridwar plains to over 7,000 m in the high Himalaya. This guide brings together Uttarakhand weather today for 15 places, a month-by-month overview, how altitude changes everything, and how to stay safe in the monsoon and winter.
Uttarakhand weather in one line: Hot summers in the foothills, pleasant summers in the hills, a heavy monsoon from July to September, crystal-clear October–November, and snow above about 2,000 m from December to February.

Why the Weather Changes So Much: Altitude
The single biggest factor in Uttarakhand's weather is height. As a rule of thumb, every 1,000 m you climb is about 6°C colder. That gives the state three broad weather zones:
- Foothills and valleys (300–1,000 m): Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Haldwani, Tanakpur. Hot summers (35–40°C in May–June), mild winters, heavy monsoon.
- Mid hills (1,500–2,500 m): Mussoorie, Nainital, Almora, Lansdowne, Ranikhet. Pleasant summers (20–25°C), cold winters with occasional snow.
- High Himalaya (above 2,500 m): Auli, Chopta, Kedarnath, Badrinath. Cool summers, long snowy winters, and shrines closed from roughly November to April.

Seasons in Uttarakhand
Summer (March – June)
The hill stations are at their best, with sunny 20–25°C days, which is why Mussoorie and Nainital are busiest in May and June. The foothills get properly hot, often 35–40°C in Dehradun and Rishikesh by late May. The Char Dham Yatra opens in late April or May.
Monsoon (July – September)
Uttarakhand gets most of its rain in these three months, often 500–700 mm a month in the hills. The landscape is lush, but landslides and road closures are common, especially on the routes to Kedarnath, Badrinath and Gangotri. The Valley of Flowers is at its best in this season.
Autumn (October – November)
The clearest weather of the year: dry air, blue skies and sharp views of the snow peaks. Days are comfortable and nights get colder through November. Read our October and November guides.
Winter (December – February)
Cold everywhere, with snow above about 2,000 m and dense fog on the plains around Haridwar and Dehradun. Snow arrives in spells brought by western disturbances. See our snowfall prediction and calendar and snowfall places guides.
Monsoon Safety
- Check road conditions before every hill drive in July–September.
- Avoid driving after dark and on days with a heavy-rain alert.
- Keep a buffer day: landslides can block roads for hours or days.
- Save the emergency numbers for the districts you are travelling through.
Winter Travel Tips
- Dense fog on the plains in December–January slows road and rail travel, so start after it lifts or travel overnight.
- Shaded bends in the hills stay icy after snowfall. Drive in daylight and carry chains or hire a local driver.
- Never use charcoal or gas heaters in a closed room.
Official Weather Alerts
The India Meteorological Department's Meteorological Centre in Dehradun issues district-wise forecasts and colour-coded alerts (yellow, orange, red) for heavy rain, snow and cold waves. An orange or red alert for the district you are heading to is a good reason to change plans.
